Finally had a chance to watch Tarkovsky’s Stalker this past weekend. It was excellent. I have Andrei Rublev on my to-watch list and can hopefully get to it soon. In other highbrow-culture news, I finished Sodom and Gomorrah and started The Prisoner. So far so good. I should invest in more tweed, even if I won’t be able to wear it for another few months. I’m committed to finishing the Recherche at this point, and am feeling the urge to dip back into genre stuff afterward. There’s the next volume of Elric stories, but I’ll probably save that for holiday reading.
This week we’ll be road-tripping towards the northeast to deposit a daughter at the university where she’ll be doing PhD work in physics. It will be a quick up-and-back sort of thing, but should be a nice drive.
Today is the Feast of St. Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr. Summoned by Valerian in order to surrender the treasure of the Church, Lawrence showed up leading a parade of the poor. “Here,” he said to the emperor, “is the treasure of the Church.” He was sentenced to death that same day.
